Jim, when I suggested to Spock
that it was time
for his routine checkup,
your logical, unemotional
First Officer
turned to me and said:
"You will cease to pry
"into my personal matters,
Doctor,
or I shall certainly
break your neck."
[McCoy]
Captain... I should like
to request a leave of absence
on my home planet.
On our present course,
you can divert to Vulcan
with a loss
of but 2.8 light-days.
[Spock]
All right, Spock, let's have it.
[Kirk]
It is undignified for a woman
to play servant
to a man who is not hers.
[Spock]
I'm more interested
in your request for shore leave.
In all the years...
[Kirk]
You have my request, Captain.
Will you grant it or not?
[Spock]
I suppose most of us overlook
the fact that even Vulcans
aren't indestructible.
[Kirk]
No...
we're not.
[Spock]
Captain's Log, Stardate 3372.7.
On course, on schedule,
bound for Altair VI via Vulcan.
First Officer Spock
seems to be under stress.
He has requested
and been granted shore leave.
Ship's Surgeon McCoy has him
under medical surveillance.
[Kirk]
Lieutenant Uhura,
acknowledge that message.
[Kirk]
Head directly for Altair VI.
Head directly for Altair VI. Sailor's luck, Mr. Spock. Or as one of Finagle's Laws puts it: "Any home port the ship makes will somebody else's, not mine."
Captain, lock me away.
I do not wish to be seen.
I cannot... no Vulcan could...
explain further.
[Spock]
There's a growing imbalance
of body functions.
As if, in our bodies,
huge amounts of adrenaline
were constantly being pumped
into our bloodstreams.
Now, I can't trace it down
in my bio-comps.
Spock won't tell me what it is.
But if it isn't stopped somehow,
the physical and emotional
pressures will simply kill him.
[McCoy]
We shield it
with ritual and custom
shrouded in antiquity.
You humans have no conception.
It strips our minds from us.
It brings a madness which...
rips away
our veneer of civilization.
It is the Pon farr.
The time of mating.
[Spock]
Captain, you're making
a most unusual request.
[Komack]
I'm aware of that, sir,
but it's
of the utmost importance.
You must give me permission
to divert to Vulcan.
[Kirk]
But you refuse to explain
why it is so important.
[Komack]
But believe me, I wouldn't
make such a request...
Altair VI is no ordinary matter.
[Kirk]
Altair VI is no ordinary matter.
That area
is just putting itself together
after a long
interplanetary conflict.
This inauguration will stabilize
the entire Altair system.
Our appearance there
is a demonstration
of friendship and strength,
which will cause ripples
clear to the Klingon Empire.
[Komack]
I know the Altair situation.
We would be
one of three starships.
Very impressive,
very diplomatic.
But it's simply not that vital.
[Kirk]
You can't go off to Vulcan
against Starfleet orders.
[Kirk]
It would be illogical for us
to protest
against our natures...
don't you think?
[Spock]
Bones, you know who that is?
T'Pau.
The only person
to ever turn down a seat
in the Federation Council.
[Kirk]
You will instruct Mr. Chekov
to plot a course
for the nearest starbase
where I must surrender myself
to the authorities.
[Spock]
Stonn wanted me.
I wanted him.
[T’Pring]
I see no logic
in preferring Stonn over me.
[Spock]
You have become much known
among our people, Spock...
almost a legend.
And as the years went by,
I came to know
that I did not want to be
the consort of a legend,
but by the laws of our people,
I could only divorce you
by the Kal-if-fee.
There was also Stonn,
who wanted very much
to be my consort,
and I wanted him.
If your Captain were victor,
he would not want me,
and so I would have Stonn.
If you were victor,
you would free me
because I had dared
to challenge,
and again, I would have Stonn.
But if you did not free me,
it would be the same,
for you would be gone,
and I would have your name
and your property,
and Stonn would still be there.
[T’Pring]
Logical.
Flawlessly logical.
[Spock]
I am honored.
[T’Pring]
Live long, T'Pau...
and prosper.
[Spock]
Live long and prosper, Spock.
[T'Pau]
Captain Kirk, message
from Starfleet Command.
Top priority.
Response to T'Pau's request
for diversion of Enterprise
to planet Vulcan
hereby approved.
Any reasonable delay granted.
Komack, Admiral,
Starfleet Command.
[Uhura]
Well, a little late, but I'm
glad they're seeing it our way.
How about that T'Pau?
They couldn't turn her down.
[Kirk]
There's just one thing,
Mr. Spock.
You can't tell me that when
you first saw Jim alive
that you weren't on the verge
of giving us an emotional scene
that would've brought
the house down.
[McCoy]
Merely my quite logical relief
that Starfleet had not lost
a highly proficient Captain.
[Spock]
Of course, Mr. Spock.
Your reaction was quite logical.
In a pig's eye.
[McCoy]
Here's the report on Pollux V, Captain. This entire system has been almost the same. A strange lack of intelligent life on the planet. It bucks the percentages. [Palamas]
Bucks them? Well, carry out the standard procedures on Pollux IV. [Kirk]
Bones. Could you get the excited over a cup of coffee? [Kirk]
Even from here, I can tell this pulse rate's up. [McCoy]
I'm not sure I like that, Jim. [McCoy]
Why, Bones? Scotty's a good man. [Kirk]
And he thinks he's the right man for her, but I'm not sure she thinks he's the right man. On the other hand, she's a woman. All woman. One day, she'll find the right man. Off she'll go, out of the service. [McCoy]
Mn-hmm. I like to think of it not so much as losing an officer as gaining... Actually, I'm losing an officer. [Kirk]
Preliminary reports, Mr. Spock? [Kirk]
Pollux IV. Class-M-type planet, oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere. Sensors indicate no life forms. Approximate age: four billion years. Judged no reason for contact. In all respects, quite ordinary, Captain.
Captain, that thing's a giant hand. [Sulu]
What is it, Mr. Spock? Is it a... a hand? [Kirk]
Negative, Captain. Not living tissue. [Spock]
A trick then, a projection? [Kirk]
Not a projection, sir. A field of energy. [Spock]
Hard about. [Kirk]
Captain's Log, Stardate 3468.1. While approaching Pollux IV, a planet in the Beta Geminorum system, the Enterprise has been stopped in space by an unknown force of some kind. [Kirk]
Lieutenant, relay our position and circumstances to Starbase 12 immediately. [Kirk]
Aye, aye, sir. [Uhura]
Mr. Sulu, try rocking the ship. Full impulse power forward and back. [Kirk]
Aye, aye, sir. [Sulu]
Damage report coming in, Captain. Situation under control. Minor damage: Stations Three, Seven and 19. [Uhura]
Sick Bay reports five minor injuries, all being treated. [McCoy]
Mr. Spock... Status? [Kirk]
The ship is almost completely encircled by the field. It resembles a conventional force field, but on unusual wavelengths. Despite its appearance, that of a human appendage, it is definitely not living tissue. It is energy. [Spock]
Activity on hailing channel three, sir. [Uhura]
Put it on audio, Lieutenant. [Kirk]
The eons have passed... and what has been written has come about. You are most welcome, my beloved children. Your places await you. [Apollo]
Response frequency, Lieutenant. [Kirk]
Calculated. Channel open, sir. [Uhura]
You have left your plains and valleys and made this bold venture. So it was in the beginning. You have made me proud. Now you can rest. [Apollo]
This is Captain James T. Kirk, commanding the U.S.S. Enterprise. Please identify yourself. [Kirk]
We shall remember together. We shall drink the sacramental wine. There shall be the music of the pipes. The long wait has ended. [Apollo]
Are you responsible for stopping the ship? [Kirk]
Yes. I caused the wind to withdraw from your sails. [Apollo]
Give it back. Then we'll talk. [Kirk]
It has been 5,000 years. Have you learned no patience in that time. [Apollo]
I don't know who or what you are, but I must warn you, we have the power to defend ourselves. If you value your safety, release this ship. [Kirk]
You have the same fire. How like your fathers you are. Agamemnon, Hector, Odysseus... [Apollo]
Never mind the history lesson. Release the ship! [Kirk]
You will obey me... lest I close my hand... thus... [Apollo]
External pressure building up, Captain. 800 GSC and climbing. [Scott]
Compensate. [Kirk]
1,000 GSC and climbing. [Scott]
All right, whatever you're doing, turn it off. You win. [Kirk]
That was your first lesson. Remember it. Captain Kirk, I invite you and your officers to join me, but do not bring that one... the one with the pointed ears. He is much like Pan, and Pan always bored me. No sad faces. This is a time to rejoice, not to fear. You are returning home. Let your hearts prepare to sing. [Apollo]
Let's go, Bones. You in good voice? [Kirk]
Sure it's wise, Jim? [McCoy]
If we don't accept his invitation, we'll have a crushed eggshell where this ship used to be. [Kirk]
Verbose, isn't he? [Spock]
Insulted, Spock? [Kirk]
Insults are effective only where emotion is present. [Spock]
Good. We'll tackle him together. We already know the questions. You're the best man to find the answers. [Kirk]
What am I doing down here, Doctor? [Palamas]
Well, you're the A&A officer, aren't you? Archaeology, anthropology, ancient civilizations? [McCoy]
Correct. [Palamas]
Well, we're going to need help in all those areas. [McCoy]
My children... long have I waited for this moment. The memories you bring of your lush and beautiful Earth, green fields and blue skies, the simple shepherds and their flocks... [Apollo]
Search your most distant memories, those of the thousands of years passed, and I am there. Your fathers knew me, and your fathers' fathers. I am Apollo. [Apollo]
And I am the Czar of all the Russias. I'm sorry, Captain. I never met a god before. [Chekov]
And you haven't yet. Readings, Doctor? [Kirk]
Simple humanoid, Captain. [McCoy]
Evidently not so simple. [Kirk]
Earth... mother of the most beautiful of women in the universe. That, at least, has not changed. I am pleased. Yes, my children. Zeus, Athena, Aphrodite, Artemis... a gallant band of travelers. We knew your Earth well 5,000 of your years ago. [Apollo]
What is it you want? [Kirk]
You will worship me, as your fathers did before you. [Apollo]
If you want to play god and call yourself Apollo, that's your business, but you're no good to us, mister. [Kirk]
I said you would worship me! [Apollo]
And you've got a lot to learn! [Kirk]
And so have you! Let the lesson begin! [Apollo]
Mr. Spock, I can't contact the landing party. All frequencies are jammed. [Uhura]
Try to break through it, Lieutenant. [Spock]
Transporter and communications? [Sulu]
Very efficient. Mr. Sulu, rig all transmission circuits for maximum power generation. Compute for reversal of polarity of the field around the ship. [Spock]
Lieutenant Kyle, I want a complete sensor scan of the planet. Locate all the life-forms. I want to know what's going on down there.
To coin a phrase-- fascinating. [McCoy]
Analysis. Lieutenant Palamas, what do you know about Apollo? [Kirk]
Apollo, uh, twin brother of Artemis, son of the god Zeus and Leto, a mortal. He was the god of light and purity. He was skilled in the bow and the lyre. [Palamas]
Bones, how is he? [Kirk]
Stunned, but coming around. I'm not sure it's wise to let her go off like that. You saw how capricious he is-- benevolent one minute, angry the next. One wrong move from her, and he could kill her. [McCoy]
Mr. Scott, I understand your concern over her, but she volunteered to go with him. Hopefully, to find out more about him. She's doing her job. I think it's about time you started doing yours. We've got to find out the source of his power. You've got a tricoder. Use it if you're able to. [Kirk]
I'm able, sir. [Scott]
Mr. Spock, here's something. There seems to be a radiated energy pulsation coming from the planet. I don't know what it is, sir. [Sulu]
Origin? [Spock]
I can't seem to pinpoint it, sir. [Sulu]
I would suggest, Mr. Sulu, that if you cannot find out where the power source is, you should find out where it is not. A simple process of elimination. [Spock]
A whole planet, sir? Yes, sir, the whole planet. [Sulu]
Oh, it's lovely. [Palamas]
I've known other women-- Daphne, Cassandra-- but none more beautiful than you.
What happened to the others? Artemis, Hera? [Palamas]
They returned to the cosmos on the wing of the wind. [Apollo]
You mean they died? [Palamas]
No. Not as you understand it. We're immortal, we gods. But the Earth changed. Your fathers changed. They turned away until we were only memories. A god cannot survive as a memory. We need love, admiration, worship, as you need food. [Apollo]
You really think you're a god? [Palamas]
In a real sense, we were gods. We had the power of life and death. We could have struck out from Olympus and destroyed. We have no wish to destroy. So, we came home again. It was an empty place without worshipers. But we had no strength to leave. So, we waited. All of us, through the long years. [Apollo]
But... you said the others didn't die. [Palamas]
Even for a god, there's a point of no return. Hera was first. She stood in front of the temple and spread herself upon the wind. Thinner and thinner, until only the wind remained. But I knew you would come. You striving, bickering, foolishly brave humans. I knew you would come of the stars one day. Of all the gods, I knew, and I waited. Waited for you to come... and sit by my side. [Apollo]
There is a repeated occurrence of registrations. A regular pulsating pattern of radiated energy. [Chekov]
Unquestionably, an immensely powerful field of energy is being generated around here somewhere, but we're just having difficulty focusing on it. [Scott]
Apollo has no difficulty focusing. He taps that energy, Mr. Scott. [Kirk]
Sir, some creatures can generate and control energy with no harm to themselves. The electric eel on Earth, the giant dryworm of Antos IV, the fluffy...
Not the whole encyclopedia, Chekov. [McCoy]
The Captain requires complete information. [Chekov]
Spock's contaminating this boy, Jim. [McCoy]
Are you suggesting that he-- Apollo-- taps a flow of energy and channels it through his body?
That would seem most likely, sir. [Chekov]
Mr. Chekov, I think you're earned your pay for the week. But where is the source of that power? [Kirk]
Where's Apollo? [Kirk]
He disappeared again, like the cat in that Russian story. [Chekov]
Don't you mean the English story-- Chestier cat? [Kirk]
Chestier? No, sir. Minsk, perhaps, but... [Chekov]
How do you feel? [McCoy]
I can't get my arm to move. [Scott]
Some neural damage. [Scott]
We've got to get out of here. [Kirk]
How? [Chekov]
Well, let's assume that 5,000 years ago, creatures like our friend Apollo did indeed visit Earth, and formed the basis of the Greek classic myths.
It makes sense. [McCoy]
Most mythology has its basis in fact. If I remember my ancient legends, the gods, after expending energy require rest, even as we humans. [Kirk]
And Apollo is gone... after attacking you and Mr. Scott. You think maybe he's off somewhere recharging his energy cells? [Chekov]
Something like that. Remember he's keeping a force field on the ship, and he's expending energy down here. You said he looked pained and tired when he disappeared. If we can wear him out, overwork him, that might do it. [Kirk]
Progress, Mr. Sulu? [Spock]
Sectors one through 25 charted and examined. No chance at all of power originating in those areas.
Continue the search. [Spock]
Aye, sir. 14B by 26 is next. [Sulu]
Mr. Kyle. We're unable to break completely loose from this force field, but we might be able to punch some holes through it. [Spock]
What for, sir? [Kyle]
To shoot through. It might also relieve Lieutenant Uhura's communications problem. We'll take these equations to the Nuclear Electronics Lab. I want them to work on the problem of negating the force field in selected areas. Now, it might be done by generating a strong pinpoint charge of M-rays on some of these selected wavelengths and tying them in with the combined output of all our engines. [Spock]
Come here. I know you're trying to escape me. It's useless. I know everything you do. I try to be compassionate toward your kind. [Apollo]
You know nothing about our kind. You know only our remote ancestors who trembled before your tricks. Your tricks don't frighten us. Neither do you. We've come a long way in 5,000 years. [Kirk]
But you're still of the same nature. I could sweep you out of existence with a wave of my hand and bring you back again. I can give life or death. What else does mankind demand of its gods?
Mankind has no need for gods. We find the one quite adequate. [Kirk]
We shall not debate, mortal. I offer you eternal rest and happiness according to the ancient ways. I ask little in return, but what I ask for, I insist upon. Approach me. I said approach me! [Apollo]
Fools. I offer them more than they could know. Not just a world, but all that makes it up. Man thinks he'd progressed. They're wrong. He's merely forgotten those things which gave life meaning. You'll all be provided for, cared for... happy. There is an order of things in this universe. Your species has denied it. I come to restore it. And for you... because you have the sensitivity to understand... I offer you more than your wildest dreams have ever imagined-- to become the mother of a new race of gods. You'll inspire the universe. All men will reverse you almost as a god yourself. And I shall love you for time without end worlds without end. You shall complete me and I you. [Apollo]
Carolyn. What happened to her? [Scott]
Scotty... I'll find out. [Kirk]
Uh, perhaps if I assisted... [Chekov]
How old are you? [Kirk]
22, sir. [Chekov]
Then I'd better handle it. [Kirk]
I have a message for you. [Palamas]
Well? [Kirk]
He wants us to live in peace. He wants to provide for us. He'll give us everything we ever wanted. And he can do it, too. You've got work to do. [Palamas]
All right, Lieutenant, you can come down from Mount Olympus now. You've got work to do. [Kirk]
I don't understand. [Palamas]
He thrives on love, worship, attention. [Kirk]
Yes. [Palamas]
We can't give him that worship. None of us can. Especially you. [Kirk]
What?! [Palamas]
Spurn him. Reject him. You must. You're special to him. [Kirk]
Yes. I love him. [Palamas]
Lieutenant, all our lives, here and on the ship, depend on you. [Kirk]
No! Not on me. [Palamas]
On you, Lieutenant. Reject him and we have a chance to save our selves. Accept him, and you condemn all of us to slavery-- nothing less than slavery. We might never get help this far out. Or perhaps the thought of... spending an eternity bending knee and tending sheep appeals to you.
Oh, but you don't understand. He's kind, and, and he wants the best for us. And he's so lonely. What you ask would break his heart. Now, how can I? [Palamas]
Give me your hand. Your hand. Now feel that. Human flesh against human flesh. We're the same. We share the same history, the same heritage, the same lives. We're tied together beyond any untying. Man or woman, it means no difference. We're human. We couldn't escape from each other even if we wanted to. That's how you do it, Lieutenant. By remembering who and what you are-- a bit of flesh and blood afloat in a universe without end. And the only thing that's truly yours is the rest of humanity. That's where our duty lies. Do you understand me? [Kirk]
Yes. Yes, I understand. He's calling me. [Palamas]
Lieutenant, You have your orders and your duty. [Kirk]
Yes, sir. My orders and my duty. [Palamas]
Spock here, Captain. We've pinpointed a power source on the planet's surface which seems to have something to do with the force field. Is there a structure of some sort near you? [Kirk]
There is indeed, Mr. Spock. [Kirk]
The power emanates from there. [Spock]
Very good. How are you doing on the force field? [Kirk]
We can negate sections of it, creating openings through which we can fire our phaser banks.
Well, that ought to do it. Have Mr. Sulu lock all phaser banks onto the structure. Fire on my order only and cut it fine. We'll be standing nearby.
Captain, I would recommend a discreet distance. [Spock]
I'd love to oblige you, Mr. Spock, but we're not all together. Besides, we have Apollo to deal with. If that structure is the source of his power, I want to know where he is when we attack it. Kirk out. [Kirk]
Bones, do you think that mysterious organ in Apollo's chest could have something to do with the transmission of energy?
Well, it doesn't serve any other purpose I know of. [McCoy]
I must say, Apollo, the way you ape human behavior is remarkable, but there are some other things I must know-- your evolutionary patterns and your social development... [Palamas]
My what? [Apollo]
I'm sure they're unique. I've never encountered a specimen like you before. [Palamas]
I am Apollo. I've chosen you. [Apollo]
Well, I'm sure that's very flattering, but I must get on with my work now. [Palamas]
Your work?
I'm a scientist. My particular specialty is ancient civilizations, relics and myths. Well, surely you know I've only been studying you. [Palamas]
I don't believe it. You love me. [Apollo]
Love you? Be logical. I'm not some simple shepherdess you can awe. Why, I could no more love you than I could love a newspecies of bacteria.
Carolyn... I forbid you to go. I order you to stay. [Apollo]
Is that the secret of your power over women? The thunderbolts you throw? [Palamas]
What the devil is that? [McCoy]
Spock, Captain. Sensors are picking up an atmospheric disturbance in your area. [Spock]
Captain, we've got to go and find her! [Scott]
We've got to be here when he comes back. [Kirk]
But what if he doesn't? What if he...? [Scott]
All right. The temple is his power source. Let's bring him back to it. Get to cover. Mr. Spock, fire those phasers. [Kirk]
Captain, you're too close. [Spock]
Fire those phasers! That's an order, Mr. Spock! [Kirk]
All phaser banks, fire. [Sulu]
I would have cherished you, cared for you. I would have love you as a father loves his children. Did I ask so much? [Apollo]
We've outgrown you. You asked for something we can no longer give. You asked for something we can no longer give.
We believe what you say, Captain Kirk, but our position has not altered. The Halkan Council cannot permit your Federation to mine dilithium crystals on our planet. [the Halkan leader]
We have shown the Council historical proof that our missions are peaceful. [Kirk]
You're ordered to annihilate the Halkans unless they comply. No alternative. [Uhura]
But it is clear that we cannot expect their cooperation. They have refused the Empire. Command procedure dictates that we provide the customary example. [Spock]
A serious breach of orders, Captain. [Spock]
I have my reasons... and I'll make them clear to you in my own good time. [Kirk]
So you die, Captain. And we all move up in rank. No one will question the assassination of Captain who has disobeyed Prime Orders of the Empire. [Chekov]
Here, here. What's this? [McCoy]
It's called blood. Watch your step. The officers move up by assassination. Chekov tried it on me. [Kirk]
Mr. Sulu is Security Chief, like the ancient Gestapo. [Scotty]
And my Sick Bay is a chamber of horrors. Two of my assistants were betting on the tolerance of an injured man-- how long it would take him to pass out from the pain. [McCoy]
I'll need help. And you'd be too conspicuous. [Scotty]
I'm a doctor, not an engineer. [McCoy]
Now, you're an engineer. I'll have to tap the power we need from the warp engines and balance it for the four of us. [Scotty]
Spock, what is it that will buy you? Power? [Kirk]
Fascinating. [Spock]
Captain, may I inquire if you intend to persist in your unusual course of action regarding the Halkans? [Spock]
You heard my orders. [Kirk]
They are, of course, in contradiction to standard Empire procedure. [Spock]
Spock... do you think we should destroy the Halkans? [Kirk]
Terror must be maintained, or the Empire is doomed. [Spock]
Orders, sir? [An officer]
Release Chekov. Confine him to quarters. [Kirk]
I heard about Chekov. [Moreau]
He gambled. I won. [Kirk]
Uh-uh. You got lucky. I'm surprised that you could be caught off guard that way. [Moreau]
You're still in trouble with Starfleet Command. [Moreau]
Captain's Log, Stardate Unknown. We are trapped in a savage parallel universe from which we must escape within four hours, or I will face a death sentence at Mr. Spock's hands. [Kirk]
Shall I activate the Tantalus field? You'll at least want to monitor him, won't you? [Moreau]
Yes. [Kirk]
I hate this thing. [Moreau]
It's not that bad. [Kirk]
Of course not. It made you Captain. [Moreau]
Computer. [Spock]
Ready. [the Computer]
Explain computer activity in the Engineering Section. [Spock]
What I don't understand is how you were able to identify our counterparts so quickly. [Kirk]
It was far easier for you as civilized men to behave like barbarians than it was for them as barbarians to behave like civilized men. I assume they returned to their Enterprise at the same time you appeared here. [Spock]
Probably. However, that Jim Kirk will find a few changes if I read my Spock's correctly. [Kirk]
Jim, I think I liked him with a beard better. Gave him character. Of course, almost any change would be a distinct improvement. [McCoy]
What worries me is the easy way his counterpart fitted into that other universe. I always thought Spock was a bit of a pirate at heart. [Kirk]
Indeed, gentlemen. May I point out that I had an opportunity to observe your counterparts here quite closely. They were brutal, savage, unprincipled, uncivilized, treacherous. In every way, splendid examples of Homo sapience, the very flower of humanity. I found them quite refreshing. [Spock]
Lieutenant, uh, Lieutenant... [Kirk]
Marlena Moreau. I was just assigned last week. [Moreau]
All right, Lieutenant, carry on. [Kirk]
Well, I just might stake out a claim and settle down here, Jim. [McCoy]
It is spectacular, isn't it? [Kirk]
It's a shame to have to intrude. [McCoy]
Well, the last scout ship reported some pretty strange sensor readings. Starfleet wants it investigated and the inhabitants contacted. We do what we're told. [Kirk]
Soil here is remarkably rich and fertile, Captain. Husbandry would be quite efficacious. [Spock]
Are you sure about that? [Kirk]
Oh, quite sure. Readings indicate the entire planet is covered with growth like this. Curious. Even at the poles, there's very little variation in temperature, which maintains a planet-wide average of 76 degrees. [Spock]
I know. Almost impossible. [Kirk]
It makes me homesick. Just like Russia. [Chekov]
More like the Garden of Eden, Ensign. [McCoy]
What did somebody say-- that paradise must have looked like this? [Kirk]
Captain's Log, Stardate 3715.3. While making a routine exploration of the unexplored Gamma Trianguli VI, one of my men has been killed by a poisonous plant. [Kirk]
I could do with a nice walk in a garden, with green leaves and grass. [Scotty]
We'll do the walking, Scotty. You get on the antimatter pod. If it gets any worse, let me know, we'll beam up. Kirk out. [Kirk]
All this beauty, and now Mr. Hendorff dead, somebody watching us. It's frightening. [Landon]
If you insist on worrying, worry about me. I've been wanting to get you in place like this for a long time. [Chekov]
We've been watched, we'll probably be watched. We're moving out. Formation L.. [Kirk]
Obviously highly unstable, Captain. This could be a find of some importance. In large quantities, it could be a considerable source of power. [Spock]
Our antimatter pods are completely inert. I couldn't stop it, but I know why. Something from the surface. Like a pail of water on a fire. A beam maybe, or a transmission. And it's still on. [Scotty]
If Scott is correct about the force from the surface, it may have to do with the vibrations I read earlier. [Spock]
Scotty, energize. Scotty, what's the matter? [Kirk]
We can't make transporter contact, sir. The entire system's inhibited. The way it is now, we couldn't beam up a fly. [Scotty]
Captain's Log, supplementary. Our investigation of Gamma Trianguli VI has suddenly turned into a nightmare. We're being watched and followed. Mr. Spock has been injured. And now we find we are unable to return to the ship. [Kirk]
30 seconds ago, there wasn't a cloud in the sky. [Kirk]
Hendorff. I know Kaplan's family. Now Mallory. [Kirk]
Jim, you couldn't have stopped any of this. [McCoy]
His father helped me get into the Academy. [Kirk]
Captain, in each case, this was unavoidable. [Spock]
I could have prevented all of it. [Kirk]
I don't see how. [Spock]
A walk in paradise... among the green grass and the flowers. I should have beamed up at the first sign of trouble. [Kirk]
You are under orders to investigate this planet and this culture. [Spock]
I also have the option to disregard those orders if I consider them overly hazardous. This isn't that important a mission, Spock-- not worth the lives of three of my men. I dropped my guard for a minute because I like the smell of growing things, and now three men are dead, and the ship's in trouble. [Kirk]
No one has ever stated that Starfleet duty was particularly safe. You've followed the correct and logical course-- done everything a commander could do. Self-recriminations... Captain, our friend is back. [Spock]
Enterprise to Captain Kirk. Condition Red, Condition Red. Captain, something has grabbed us from the planet's surface-- like a giant tractor beam, and we can't break loose. [Scott]
Scotty... you're my Chief Engineer. You know everything about that ship that there is to know-- more than the men who designed it. If you can't get those warp engines working, you're fired. [Kirk]
Captain's Log, Stardate 3715.6. We have been introduced to Vaal-- evidently the source of the planet's power emanations, and possibly the force that threatens both us and our ship. [Kirk]
Fascinating. Very high order of workmanship. Very ancient. Generating great power. The center is deep in the earth beneath us. This is an access point. It would also seem to be a... [Spock]
A force field? [Kirk]
These people are from another place. They have come among us. Welcome them. [Akuta]
Welcome to Vaal. [Vaal people]
Now, we're welcome. Awhile ago, this hole planet was trying to kill us. It doesn't make sense. [Chekov]
Kirk to Enterprise. Come in. Status report, Scotty. [Kirk]
No change, Captain. The orbit is decaying along computed lines. No success with the warp drive. We're going down, and we can't stop it. [Scott]
I'm sick of hearing that word "can't." Get that ship out of there. [Kirk]
Sir, we're doing everything within engineering reason. [Scott]
Then use your imagination. Tie every ounce of power the ship has into the impulse engines. Discard the warp drive nacelles if you have to and crack out of there with the main section, but get that ship out of there! [Kirk]
Sir, I'm going to switch over everything but the life support systems and boost the impulse power, but that's just about as dangerous. [Scott]
What's going on, Jim? [McCoy]
Mess call. [Kirk]
In my view, a splendid example of reciprocity. [Spock]
It would take a computerized Vulcan mind such as yours to make that kind of a statement. [McCoy]
Doctor, you insist on applying human standards nonhuman cultures. I remind you that humans are only a tiny minority in this galaxy. [Spock]
There are certain absolutes, Mr. Spock, and one of 'em is the right of humanoids to a free and unchained environment, the right to have conditions which permit growth. [McCoy]
Another is their right to choose a system which seems to work for them. [Spock]
Jim, you're not just going to stand by and be blinded to what's going here. These are humanoids, intelligent.... They need to advance and grow. Don't you understand what my readings indicate? There's been no change or progress here in at least 10,000 years. This isn't life. It's stagnation. [McCoy]
Doctor, these people are healthy, and they are happy. Whatever you choose to call it, this system works despite your emotional reaction to it. [Spock]
It might work for you, Mr. Spock, but it doesn't work for me. Humanoids living so they can service a hunk of tin? [McCoy]
Gentlemen, I think this philosophical argument can wait until our ship's out of danger. [Kirk]
How are you coming along with the circuit switch-over? [Kirk]
We're putting everything but the kitchen sink into the impulse power, sir. [Scott]
I am concerned, Captain. This may not be an ideal society, but it is a viable one. [Spock]
Bones was right. These people aren't living, they're existing. They don't create, they don't produce, they don't even think. They exist to service a machine. [Kirk]
If we do what it seems we must, in my opinion, we'll be in direct violation of the Noninterference Directive. [Spock]
They are people, not robots. They should have the opportunity of choice. We owe it to them to interfere. [Kirk]
Starfleet Command may think otherwise. [Spock]
Second degree burns. Not serious, but I bet they smart. [McCoy]
Doctor, you have an unsurpassed talent for understatement. [Spock]
Tremendous upsurge in generated power, Captain. Obviously, Vaal is trying to reinforce its energy field. [Spock]
Scotty, status report. [Kirk]
Tractor beam's gone. Potency returning to antimatter pods. I'll have all engineering sections working on the circuits immediately. Transporter will be ready in an hour. [Scott]
Scotty, You'll be rehired. [Kirk]
Captain, I'm not at all certain we did the correct thing on Gamma Trianguli VI. [Spock]
We put those people back on a normal course of social evolution. I see nothing wrong in that. [McCoy]
Well, it's a good object lesson, Mr. Spock. An example of what can happen when a machine becomes to efficient, does too much work for you. [Kirk]
Captain, you are aware of the biblical story of Genesis? [Spock]
Yes, of course, I'm aware of it. Adam and Eve tasted the apple, and as a result, were driven out of paradise. [Kirk]
Precisely, Captain. And in a manner of speaking, we have given the people of Vaal the apple-- the knowledge of good and evil, if you will as a result of which, they, too, have been driven out of paradise. [Spock]
Doctor, do I understand him correctly? Are you casting me in the role of Satan? [Kirk]
Not at all, Captain. I'm simply... [Spock]
Is there anyone on this ship who even remotely looks like Satan? [Kirk]
I am not aware of anyone who fits that description, Captain. [Spock]
No, Mr. Spock. I didn't think you would be. [Kirk]
The distress call definitely came from one of the solar systems in this sector, Captain. [Palmer]
Can you pinpoint it any closer, Lieutenant? [Kirk]
Sir, we're now within the limits of System L-370, but I can't seem to locate... [Sulu]
Captain, sensors show this entire solar system has been destroyed. Nothing left but rubble and asteroids. [Spock]
But that's incredible. The star in this system is still intact. Only a nova could destroy like that. [Kirk]
Nonetheless, Captain, sensors show nothing but debris where we charted seven planets last year. [Spock]
Entering limits of System L-374, sir. Scanners show the same evidence of destruction. [Sulu]
Every solar system in this sector blasted to rubble, and still no sign of the Constellation. Matt Decker's in command. What could have happened to him? [Kirk]
Captain, the two innermost planets of this system appear to be intact. [Spock]
Sir, I'm picking up a ship's disaster beacon. [Palmer]
Try to raise her, Lieutenant. [Kirk]
I have it on the sensors, Captain. By configuration, a starship stopped in space. She appears to be drifting. [Spock]
All I get is the automatic beacon. No answer, Captain. [Palmer]
I can't raise the Constellation, sir. I'm still getting the distress beacon, but there's heavy subspace interference. It's almost blocking the signal. [Palmer]
Radiation level normal. Atmospheric pressure-- 11 pounds per square inch. [Away team officers]
Scotty, check the phaser banks. See if they've been fired. Bones, you come with me. [Kirk]
Come along, lads. [Scotty]
参照)。
The crew wasn't abducted, they just... left. [Kirk]
Captain, I checked the engines. The warp drive, that's a hopeless pile of junk. The impulse engines are not too badly off. We ought to be able to do something with them. [Scotty]
But where are they? I can't imagine a man like Matt Decker abandoning ship while his life-support systems are still operative. [Kirk]
Spock, here, Captain. Unable to raise Starfleet Command due to heavy subspace interference. [Spock]
This whole thing's incredible. A robot? A machine like that, who would build it? [McCoy]
We don't know. An align race, apparently from another galaxy. [Kirk]
Bones, did you ever hear of a Doomsday Machine? [Kirk]
No. I'm a doctor, not a mechanic. [McCoy]
You can't let that thing reach Rigel. Why, millions of innocent people would die. [Decker]
I am aware of the Rigel system's population, Commodore, but we are only one ship. Our shields are strained. Our subspace transmitter is useless. Logically, our primary duty is to survive in order to warn Starfleet Command. [Spock]
Our primary duty is to maintain life and the safety of Federation planets. Do you deny that? [Decker]
Mr. Sulu, you will lay in an evasive course back to the Constellation. [Spock]
Belay that last order, Helmsman. [Decker]
I assumed command according to regulations. Since your First Officer was reluctant to take aggressive action against the... [Decker]
You mean you're the lunatic whose responsible for almost destroying my ship? [Kirk]
You are speaking to a senior officer, Kirk. [Decker]
How long to repair warp drive? [Kirk]
At least one solar day. [Spock]
You're bluffing. [Decker]
Ironic, isn't it, way back in the 20th century, the H-bomb was the ultimate weapon-- their Doomsday Machine-- and we used something like it to destroy another Doomsday Machine. Probably the first time such a weapon has ever been used for constructive purposes. [Kirk]
Appropriate, Captain. However, I can't help wondering if there are any more of those weapons wandering around the universe. [Spock]
Well, I certainly hope not. [Kirk]
Dress uniforms-- spit and polish. I don't know how much longer I'm going to be able to stand this. I feel like my neck's in a sling. [McCoy]
The Vulcans are the last group of delegates we have to pick up. As soon as we get them aboard, we'll be able to relax. [Kirk]
Sure. A formal reception tonight. 114 delegates aboard for two weeks. 32 of them ambassadors. Half of them mad at the another half, and the while lot touchier than a raw antimatter pile over this Coridan question. [McCoy]
How does that Vulcan salute go? [McCoy]
That hurts worse than the uniform. [McCoy]
Captain James Kirk. [Kirk]
Captain. [Sarek]
My First Officer, Commander Spock. [Kirk]
Vulcan honors us with your presence. We come to serve. [Spock]
Your service honors us, Captain. [Sarek]
Thank you. Chief Medical Officer, Dr. McCoy. [Kirk]
Captain's Log, Stardate 3842.3. We have departed Vulcan for the neutral planetoid code-named Babel. Since it is in our sector, the Enterprise has been assigned to transport ambassadors of Federation planets to this vitally important council. The issues of the council are politically complex. The passengers... explosive. [Kirk]
After all these years among humans, you still haven't learned to smile. [Amanda]
Humans smile with so little provocation. [Spock]
I gave Spock his first instruction in computers, Captain. He chose to devote his knowledge to Starfleet instead of the Vulcan Science Academy. [Sarek]
Mrs. Sarek, I just don't understand. [Kirk]
Amanda. I'm afraid you couldn't pronounce the Vulcan name. [Amanda]
Can you? [Kirk]
Well, after a fashion, and after many years of practice. Shall we continue the tour? My husband did request it. [Amanda]
It sounded more like a command. [Kirk]
Well, of course. He's a Vulcan. I'm his wife. [Amanda]
And Spock is his son. [Kirk]
You don't understand the Vulcan way, Captain. It's logical. It's a better way than ours. But it's not easy. It has kept Spock and Sarek from speaking as father and son for 18 years. [Amanda]
Spock is my best officer. And my friend. [Kirk]
I'm glad he has such a friend. It hasn't been easy on Spock-- neither human nor Vulcan, at home nowhere except Starfleet. [Amanda]
I take it that Spock disagreed with his father on a choice of career. [Kirk]
My husband has nothing against Starfleet. But Vulcans believe that peace should not depend on force. [Amanda]
Starfleet force is used only as a last resort. We're an instrument of civilization-- and it's a better opportunity for a scientist to study the universe than he could get at the Vulcan Science Academy. [Kirk]
Perhaps. But Sarek wanted Spock to follow his teachings as Sarek followed the teachings of his own father. [Amanda]
They're both stubborn. [Kirk]
A human trait, Captain. [Amanda]
Captain's Log, Stardate 3842.4. The interplanetary conference will consider the petition of the Coridan planets to be admitted to the Federation. The Coridan system has been claimed by some of the races now aboard our ship as delegates. Races who have strong personal reasons for keeping Coridan out of the Federation. The most pressing problem aboard the Enterprise is to make sure that open warfare does not break out among the delegates before the conference begins. [Kirk]
No, you. How do you vote, Sarek of Vulcan? [Gav]
Why must you know, Tellarite? [An Andrian]
In council, his vote carries others. I will know where he stands... and why. [Gav]
Tellarites do not argue for reasons. They simply argue. [Sarek]
No, you... [Gav]
Gentlemen, Ambassador Sarek is quite correct when he points out this is not the Council Chamber of Babel. I'm fully aware that the admission of Coridan is a highly debatable issue, but you won't solve it here. [Kirk]
You are correct, Captain. Quite logical. [Sarek]
My apologies, Captain. [An Andrian]
You will excuse me. [Gav]
Spock, I've always suspected that you were a little more human than you let on. Mrs. Sarek, I know about the rigorous training of the Vulcan youth, but, tell me, did he ever run and play like the human children? Even in secret? [McCoy]
Well, he, uh... he did have a pet sehlat he was very fond of. [Amanda]
Sehlat? [McCoy]
It's sort of a fat Teddy bear. [Amanda]
Favor? Why? [Gav]
Under Federation law, Coridan can be protected and its wealth administered for the benefit of its people. [Sarek]
It's well for you. Vulcan has no mining interest. [Gav]
Coridan has nearly unlimited wealth of dilithium crystals, but it is underpopulated and unprotected. This invites illegal mining operations. [Sarek]
Illegal! You accuse us? [Gav]
Some of your ships have been carrying Coridan dilithium crystals. [Sarek]
You call us thieves? [Gav]
There will be payment for your slander, Sarek. [Gav]
Threats are illogical. And payment is usually expensive. [Sarek]
Security to Captain Kirk. [Josephs]
Spock, a short time ago, I broke up an argument between Gav and your father. [Kirk]
Indeed, Captain? Interesting. [Spock]
Interesting? Spock, do you realize that makes your father the most likely suspect? [McCoy]
Vulcans do not approve of violence. [Spock]
Are you saying he couldn't have done it? [Kirk]
No, Captain. I'm merely saying it would be illogical to kill without reason. [Spock]
But if he had a reason, could he have done it? [Kirk]
If there were a reason, my father is quite capable of killing... logically and efficiently. [Spock]
Spock... [Kirk]
Yes, Captain. I get sensor readings of Tri-tritanium from the alien ship's hull. [Spock]
I'm sorry about your father. [Kirk]
Yes, it could adversely affect our mission. [Spock]
The ship's hull seems to have a high density level or is cloaked against sensor probes. It is manned, but sensors cannot make out specifics. [Kirk]
I see. Well, the Romulans have nothing like it... certainly not the Federation or the neutral planets. What about the Klingons? [Kirk]
I think it unlikely it is one of theirs. [Spock]
Who then? [Kirk]
Bridge. Spock. I'm on Deck Five near my quarters. I've been attacked by an Androrian. Security... Security Team... [Kirk]
Security here. We had to stun the Andorian. He had some sort of transceiver. It was hidden in his antenna. [A security officer]
Number four shield has buckled, sir. [Chekov]
Number two shield is gone. [Chekov]
We're starting to drift, sir. Shall I hold her on course? [Chekov]
Here he comes. Range is decreasing. Speed dropping close to sublight. [Chekov]
They could not surrender, Captain. They had orders to self-destruct. [Thelev]
Lieutenant, relay to Starfleet Command. Tell them we have a prisoner. [Kirk]
Aye, sir. [Uhura]
Only temporarily, Captain. You see, I had orders to self-destruct, too. Slow poison. Quite painless, actually, but there is no known antidote. I anticipate another ten minutes of life. [Thelev]
They destroyed themselves to avoid capture. Bones, Thelev's body will be brought to your lab. I want an autopsy performed as soon as possible. [Kirk]
I think you'll find he's an Orion, Doctor. Intelligence reports that Orion smugglers have been raiding the Coridan system. [Spock]
But what would they gain by an attack on Starfleet? [Kirk]
Mutual suspicion and interplanetary war. [Sarek]
Yes, of course. With Orion carefully neutral. They'd clean up by supplying dilithium to both sides, and continue to raid Coridan. [Kirk]
Well, what do you know? I finally got the last word. [McCoy]
Our scanner survey was correct, Captain. There it is, pure tritanium. [Spock]
Fantastic. 20 times as had as diamond. [Kirk]
21.4 times as hard, to be exact. [Spock]
Yes, thank you, Mr. Spock. [Kirk]
Scotty, you can mark this vein as confirmed. Inform Starfleet I recommend that they dispatch a survey vessel immediately. [Kirk]
Acknowledged, Captain. They'll send a vessel fast enough for this rich a find. [Scotty]
We won't be able to break it, Captain. I'll phaser off a specimen. [Spock]
Do you smell that? A sweet odor, like honey. [Kirk]
It was years ago, on another planet... a thing with an... an odor like that. [Kirk]
Rizzo, Take your men, make a swing around our perimeter. Scan for dikironium in the atmosphere. Set your phasers on disrupter-B. If you see any gaseous cloud, fire immediately. You're on Red Alert. Make a sweep. [Kirk]
Seemed to read dikironium for a minute, then I lost. [Rizzo]
It's almost like something out there knows I'm scanning it. It just kinda keeps changing itself into something different. But that isn't possible. Nothing can do that. [Rizzo]
Kirk to Enterprise. Scotty, lock in on us. Medical emergency. [Kirk]
Do you think you know what it was, Captain? [Spock]
Something that can't possibly exist.., but it does. [Kirk]
Spock, again, Captain. Those medical supplies are badly needed on planet Theta VII. They are expecting us to get them there on time. [Spock]
Autopsy report. [Kirk]
You saw their color. Wasn't a red corpuscle left in their bodies. [McCoy]
I suggest you look at the record tapes of past similar occurrences. You'll find the U.S.S. Farragut lists causalities 11 years ago from exactly the same impossible causes. [Kirk]
Have the security duty officer report me on the Bridge immediately. [Kirk]
Continuing scanning, Captain. Still no readings of life-forms on the planet surface. [Spock]
You've just suggested something... that never occurred to me. It may provide some answers to a tape record which I think you'll find Dr. McCoy is looking at this very moment. [Kirk]
Ensign Garrovick reporting, sir. [Garrovick]
Are you new security officer? [Kirk]
I want four men, armed with phaser-2s, set for dispruptor effect. Join me in the Transporter Room in five minutes. You'll accompany me to the planet's surface. [Kirk]
Yes, sir. [Grrovik]
Captain's Log, Stardate 3619.6. One of the men in critical condition. The other is dead. And I... I am now even more convinced that this is not only an intelligent creature, but the same witch decimated the crew of the U.S.S. Farragut 11 years ago in another part of the galaxy. Both Spock and McCoy are doubtful of this, and I sense they also doubt my decision to stay and fight the thing. Why am I keeping the ship here? [Kirk]
You fired at a large hovering target at that distance and missed? [Kirk]
Yes, uh... well, I-I didn't fire while it was hovering, sir. [Garrovick]
You mean you froze. [Kirk]
No... sir, I... didn't exactly freeze. [Garrovick]
Well, what exactly were you doing? [Kirk]
I, uh... I only hesitated for a moment, sir.... I'm sorry. [Garrovick]
Ensign, you're relieved of all duties and confined to quarters until further notice. [Kirk]
You were a little hard on the boy, Jim. [McCoy]
He froze. [Kirk]
Captain, while we wait, I've taken the liberty of cleaning the radioactive disposal vent on number two impulse engine, but we'll be ready to leave orbit in under a half an hour. [Kirk]
In belief, Doctor, nearly half the crew and Captain were annihilated. The Captain's name was Garrovick. [Spock]
The same as our ensign. [McCoy]
His father. [Spock]
Personal Log, Stardate 3620.7. Have I the right to jeopardize my crew, my ship, for a feeling I can't even put into word? No man achieves Starfleet command without relying on intuition, but have I made a rational decision? Am I letting the horrors of the past distort my judgment of the present? [Kirk]
It can't have just vanished. [Kirk]
Sometimes they do, if we're lucky. Monsters come in many forms. You know the greatest monster of the all, Jim? Guilt. [McCoy]
Get to the point. [Kirk]
Jim, when a young officer is exposed to unknown dangers for the first time, he's under tremendous emotional stress. Now, we all know that... [McCoy]
Ensign Garrovick is a ship command decision. You're straying out of your field, Doctor. [Kirk]
Am I? I was speaking of Lieutenant James T. Kirk of the Starship Farragut. [McCoy]
Sublight one-quarter speed. [Kirk]
Engineering to Captain Kirk. [Scotty]
Contact Medical Stores, I want as much hemoplasm as they can spare in the Transporter Room in 15 minutes. [Kirk]
I presume you intend to use the hemoplasm to attract the creature. [McCoy]追記: 血漿というのは、血液から血球成分を抜いたモノであるとの情報あり。なんじゃ、ソラ?するとこの怪物は、摂取するのは赤血球だが探すときには血漿のニオイか何かを基準にしているということなんだろうか(^^)。
A matter/antimatter blast will rip away half the planet's atmosphere. If our vessel is in orbit and encounters those shock waves... [Spock]
All decks, stand by- shock waves.
Deep Space Station K-7 now
within sensor range, Captain.
[Spock]
Good.
Mr. Chekov, this flight
is supposed to provide both
experience and knowledge.
How close will we come
to the nearest Klingon outpost
if we continue
on our present course?
[Kirk]
Ah. One parsec, sir.
Close enough to smell them.
[omit]
I was making a little joke, sir.
[Chekov]
Extremely little, Ensign.
[Spock]
Mr. Spock,
immediate past history
of the quadrant.

between the two parties
since initial contact.
The Battle of Donatu V was fought near here 23 solar years ago. Inconclusive. [Spock]
I remember, once,
Peter the Great had a problem like that. [Chekov]
Captain, I'm picking up
a subspace distress call,
priority channel.
It's from Space
Station K-7.
[Uhura]
Go to warp factor 6.
[Kirk]
Code 1 Emergency.
That's a disaster call!
[Chekov]
Captain's Log, Stardate 4523.3.
Deep Space Station K-7
has issued a priority-one call.
More than an emergency,
it signals near
or total disaster.
[Kirk]
Mr. Lurry, you issued
a priority-one distress call.
State the nature of your emergency. [Kirk]
Lieutenant, do you mind
if I take one of these
down to the lab
to see what makes it tick?
[McCoy]
Well, all right, Doctor,
but if you're going
to dissect it,
I don't want to know about it.
[Uhura]
I won't harm a hair
on its head...
wherever that is.
[McCoy]
Say, Lieutenant,
seeing as you're giving them
away, can I have one?
[Man]
Oh, sure. Why not?
I... I think they're old enough.
Go ahead.
[Uhura]
Bridge to Captain Kirk.
Mr. Baris is waiting on channel "E" to speak to you, sir. [Chekov on comm]
Captain Kirk,
there are Klingon soldiers
on this station.
[Baris]
Mr. Baris, I have guards
around the grain,
I have guards
around the Klingons...
The only reason
those guards are there
is because Starfleet
wants them there.
As for what you want...
...it has been noted
and logged.
Kirk out.
[Kirk]
Captain, may I ask
where you'll be?
[Spock]
Sick Bay, with a headache.
[Kirk]
Ah, friend Klingon!
Can I interest you
in a harmless little tribble?
[Jones]
Get out of here
with that parasite.
[Korax]
Well, frankly,
I never liked Earthers.
They remind me
of Regulan bloodworms.
[Korax]

Captain, Starfleet was able
to divert that freighter.
[Spock]
Good. That means
Sherman's Planet will get
its quadrotriticale
only a few weeks late. [Kirk]
Approaching Sigma Iota II, Captain. [Chekov]
The Horizon's contact came before the Noninterference Directive went into effect. [Kirk]
They must have interfered with the normal evolution of the planet. [McCoy]
It will be interesting to see the results of the contamination. [Spock]
Well, we don't know there is contamination. The evidence is only circumstantial. [Kirk]
Interesting. The passerby are carrying, I believe, firearms. [Spock]
What is this? [a gang]
That's a weapon. Uh, be careful with that. [Kirk]
A heater, huh? Hey, the Boss'll love that. [a gang]
Which one of you guys is the Captain? [Oxmyx]
Depends. [Kirk]
Did they leave any other books? [Kirk]
Yeah, sure. Some textbooks on how to make radio sets, and stuff like that, but... Look, I brought you down here so you could help me, not for you to ask me questions. After that, I'll answer anything you want to know. [Oxmyx]
Mr. Scott, though we home to avoid interference, I suggest you set one of our phaser banks on a strong stun position. [Spock]
Ship's Log, Mr. Spock reporting. Incredible as it seems, Dr. McCoy and I are once again prisoners of the chief criminal boss of a society patterned after old Earth gangsters. [Spock]
Pick up many more of these, I won't need your cooperation. [Oxmyx]
Young man, this is likely to be quite hazardous. If I were you... [Spock]
Hold on, Spock. Out of the mouths of babes... [Kirk]
Sit down. You know a way we could get close to them? [Kirk]
Sure. [a boy]
How? [Kirk]
What's in it for me? [a boy]
What do you want? [Kirk]
A piece of the action. [a boy]
You do not even know what the action is going to be. [Spock]
I figure it's got to be a thick percentage, or you wouldn't be trying to hit Krako. [a boy]
Logical. [Spock]
All right, young man, we'll guarantee you a piece of the action if we can pull this thing off. [Kirk]
Is that a contract? [a boy]
Done. [Kirk]
A piece of action. [Kirk]
No one can see. Put your phaser on stun. [Spock]
Now we got no busy little eyes to worry about. How does this thing work? [Krako]
All right, Krako, I don't have time to show you how to play with toys. [Kirk]
Toys? [Krako]
What do you think we're here for, to get a cut of your deal? Forget it. That's... peanuts to an outfit like the, uh, Federation, right? [Kirk]
Unquestionably. [Spock]
Right? [Kirk]
Right. [Spock]
Now, look, Krako, we're taking over the, uh, whole ball of wax, and you cooperate with us, and, uh, maybe we'll cut you in for a piece of the action. [Kirk]
I thought you guys had laws. No interference. [Krako]
Who's interfering? We're taking over. [Kirk]
The, uh, planet... is being taken over by the Federation, but we don't want to come in here and, uh, use our muscle. You know what I mean? Uh, that ain't, uh, subtle. So what we do is we... we help one guy take over the planet. He pulls the strings, and then we pull his. [Kirk]
knock it off, Sawbones. [Kirk]
All right, Spocko, cover him. [Kirk]
I left my communicator. [McCoy]
They'll find out how the transtator works. [Kirk]
Do you really think it's that serious? [McCoy]
Serious? Serious, Bones? It upsets the whole percentage. Well, in a few years, the Iotians may demand a piece of our action. [Kirk]
What happened, Captain?!
[Scott]
Lead projectile.
Primitive firearm.
[Kirk]
You have the conn, Scotty.
[Kirk]
Enterprise, McCoy.
Emergency, come in!
Enterprise, come in.
McCoy!
Emergency!
[McCoy]
They left...
out of orbit...
[Kirk]
We once were as you are...
spears, arrows.
There came a time
when our weapons grew faster
than our wisdom, and we almost
destroyed ourselves.
We learned from
this to make a rule
during all our travels...
never to cause the same
to happen to other worlds.
Just as a man must grow in his
own way and in his own time...
[Kirk]
Guards, intruders!
[Villedger]
Passing outer planet, sir. [Spock]
We want the inner one, Ekos. Plot a standard orbit, Mister Chekov and take us in. [Kirk]
Aye, sir. [Kirk]
Spacecraft approaching from inner planet. [Chekov]
From Ekos? [Kirk]
Yes, but it must be a Zeon ship. The Zeons do have a crude interplanetary capability. [Spock]
Reaction powered. A small rocket. It is on an intercept course. That would mean it has sophisticated detection devices, which neither Zeon nor Ekos should have. [Spock]
Captain, it is an unmanned probe which seems to be carrying a warhead. [Spock]
Fascinating. A thermonuclear warhead. [Spock]
Captain, the noninterference directive. [Spock]
Spock, take his uniform. [Kirk]
You propose we pass ourselves off as Nazis, Captain? [Spock]
If John Gill is the Fuhrer, it would seem the logical approach. [Kirk]
But how could this have seemed right to John Gill? John Gill-- your Fuhrer. He's one of our people. [Kirk]
And what is your people? [Abrom]
I'm Captain Kirk of United Spaceship Enterprise. This is my First Officer, Mister Spock. John Gill, your Fuhrer, was sent here by the Federation as a cultural observer. [Kirk]
With the union of two cultures, this system should make a fine addition to the Federation. [Spock]
Standard orbit, Captain. [Sulu]
Not now, Lester. Lieutenant, contact the space station. [Kirk]
Captain Kirk, this is Commodore Enwright. [Enwright]
Yes, Commodore. I'd like to explanation... [Kirk]
The explanation is beaming aboard now, Captain. He may already be in your Transporter Room. [Enwright]
Have you heard of the M-5 multitronic unit? [Wesley]
That's Dr. Richard Daystrom's device, isn't it? [Kirk]
Captain, sensors report two contacts now. One on the port bow, on on the stern. Distance: 200,000 kilometers and closing. [Spock]
I'm not interested in eating, Bones. [Kirk]
This isn't chicken soup. I may be just a ship's doctor, but I make a Finagle's Folly that's know from here to Orion. I strongly prescribe it, Jim. [McCoy]
Captain, photon torpedoes locking on target. Full power. [Spock]
Most illogical. Of all people, he should have known how the computer would perform. Of course, the M-5 itself has not behaved logically. [Spock]
Please, Spock, do me a favor and don't say it's "fascinating." [McCoy]
No... but it is... interesting. [Spock]
Genius is an understatement. At the age of 24, he made the duotronic breakthrough that won him the Nobel and Zee-Magnees Prizes. [Kirk]
In his early 20's, Jim. That's over a quarter of a century ago. [McCoy]
Mr. Chekov. Go to the Engineering station. Examine the H-279 elements. Also the G-95 systems. [Spock]
Sir, the G-95 system appears dead. All indicators are dark. [Chekov]
Thank you, Ensign. It appears, Captain, we've been doing what used to be called "pursuing a wild goose." M-5 has re-routed helm and navigational controls bypassing this primary system. [Spock]
Estimate damage on Lexington, Spock. [Kirk]
Hit in Engineering section. Possible damage to her impulse engines. She's still maneuverable on warp drive. [Spock]
